THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik! Love the site. I know sometimes you post about Skrillex. So I was at Bonnaroo over the weekend down in Tennessee. I was excited to see Skrillex….waited up until 1:30am for his show to start. Super huge crowd, so I was essentially pushed to the gate near the sound booth. As I was watching the show, I looked over to the sound booth area and noticed a bald, 40 year old white man. He had 5 computers in front of him and was running the ENTIRE show. Every beat that changed and every sound that was made, this man was doing it from his computers. The entire show was pre-recorded and this sound booth guy was running the show as Skrillex stood up on his stage pretending to do the work. I was so disappointed! I sure hope that man is profiting something off of the show….as he is apparently “Skrillex”.

if you asked the lighting guy (which you didn’t mention in your post, might i add), and he was in fact “doing the mixing” (sounds pointless to me when skrillex can just play a pre-recorded set, making things much easier), he most definitely would have had to sign a non-disclosure or something. i call shenanigans on this whole post. the poster obviously has no idea how complicated skrillex’s lighting rig is. strobes, LEDs, scanners, lasers, fog machines, nitrous cannons, not to mention several projectors playing seamless and matching visualizations on the booth. you’re a fucking retard.

I think if this were something that he were trying to hide he would have the guy somewhere out of sight. The fact that the guy is on stage in front of everyone to see tells me there is nothing to hide.

If you people knew anything about what they are doing (mixing, effects knobs, etc.) you would know that it is not easy to do live and requires quite a bit of talent. I’m the one who actually posted this and was there. No way was this the light guy…unless lighting guys have to use 5 laptops and NOTHING else during a show. And unless light guys move their hands on the laptops to every single beat that is being played. Skrillex was WAY elevated on the stage….so there is really no way to tell what he was actually doing up there. All in all, I still enjoyed the show somewhat and everyone else around me seemed to be having a great time!
It was lighting or visual guy. I haven’t been to a concert like that but I have been to others and people who control the lighting or visuals have a lot of equipment in their possession, ie, multiple monitors, laptops, etc etc. You only need one laptop to DJ, not 5. Thus, you are dumb as hell and so is everyone else that believes that. Clearly you haven’t been to many large concerts before.
it was the light guy, and most of them guys don’t consider themselves dj’s. They are live PA’s witch is a performance artist. They use abelton bridge and a midi controller. They are still twisting knobs, adding effects and other shit. But NO they are NOT mixing live like a DJ would do.

The lighting tech behind him controls all the elements for the show on, yeah… Multiple laptops, etc. He is there to improvise when needed while running the lights to a set list given to him by…Skrillex. Takes a lot of guess work out of it.

We see these guys working all the time and they run their sets as live and interactive as possible. It’s earns them more money.
just saying also… he pre worked his music whichment his performance is allowed to be way more elaborate and no room for error i mean when these places are paying a million dollars to book him… psh his set better be drawn in gold and huge heffner doing the levels in the back for that amount of money;
Reality is their sets are predetermined. The lights and visuals are such a big part of their shows you really can’t improvise. It would look terrible having the lighting guy trying to keep up with random drops. Bands have a setlist and create jams on stage they can deviate off of. That is not really possible in the genre if you think about it. I guarantee you regardless if skrillex was eating dinner behind that stage, he had everyone going absolutely bonkers for the entire set.

It totally IS possible in electronic genres, Look at EOTO. They play rhythms, melodies, vocals, etc live, while recording and looping them, then mix and use effects etc live… They are ALWAYS live, AND always improvised…But NOT always perfect… actually I think they have a lot of room to improve on basic stuff like timing. It’s not perfect pristine “press play” like Skrillex or Kanye West. What EOTO does is still pretty unique and may/may not be more complex than jam bands who have set jams to improvise on.The thing is, people who want to see live music see live music, people who want an epic dance party want an epic dance party. Some want both. STS9, etc, ftw. Cheers.

Electronic music takes the least talent of all music genres I’m not saying its all crap and It’s so easy anyone can make anything listenable but most of it is shit and most people think they can make electronic music but they can’t. It was clearly the visual effects guy. A dj doesn’t need 5 damn laptops to spin at a show. He needs one.
Who cares!!! Lighting guys don’t use laptops they use consoles specifically manufactured to run all of those moving lights. The dude with the laptops was probably the Video/FX guy. Either way Sonny is and always will be a wank, most of, if not all his garbage is ghost produced by Joel and dub step will have faded away soon enough.
Many Djs will have set playlists, and matching visuals as they are booked for a time slot. Im sure he has multiple setups for 1, 1.5, 2 hour slots etc. This makes for a uniform and a more polished show but it doesnt allow for any changes to your set. Most djs are also producers so they really dont give a crap what you want to hear, they want to show off their songs and the songs of their label mates so they can sell more records and get more gigs. Then there are people like Carl Cox, he is the other end of the spectrum, he will start and stop and sync all of his own stuff, play 3-4 decks simultaneously , add filters, effects, loops so even though you might have heard the song before he will put something special to it that will make it unique and its all instantaneous and not planned like Skrillex.
Definitely the lighting guy. Their rigs are indeed complex and use laptops. And yes, they actually DO move their hands to the sound of the beat. Go to any concert and watch the light guy…
In all reality, Skrillex used to use Ableton Live, and he might as well have used a pre-recorded set.

Either way, however he got popular, he definitely paid the right person.
I have seen Skrillex live twice and never had he pre recorded. I think nik must have made this post, cause he’s mad he had to settle with shayne and couldn’t get ellie.
he may not have performed at that particular show – but i went to see him at club Mansion in Miami and his performance was one of the BEST i’ve ever seen. he really gets it going and vibes with the crowd.

I work in production, mostly audio, but I am currently on the Life In Color (Day Glow) tour running visuals and setting up lighting. I alone use 2 standard laptops, a media server dual touch screen laptop and a control surface. Then between the LD and audio crew, there might be another 3+ laptops at front of house and on stage. I’ve also worked for Skrillex at Spring Awakening in Chicago.
Coming from someone who isn’t taking a shot in the dark, Skrillex does mix his own sets. Most likely with a mixer, laptop, serato and CDJs. I’ve also heard from fellow production staff that he’s a super nice guy with a great personality.
Chances are the guy at front of house is being sarcastic and lying to people about what he’s doing because honestly, we hear the same questions from people over and over again at shows. Its fun messing around with naive people.

i saw datsik live and i know doesnt do that… i saw him turn it down when he talks and change the x and y tables and it matched exactly what he was doing… that would be really hard too fake.. that was probally the lighting guy… they have alot of computers…

FYI you guys, no one makes electronic music live, all this is done in the comfort of the artists room, hotel room, Starbucks, or w.e. but this does not mean they’re NOT musicians. Edm artists are the only musicians to not only engineer their own synths but to mix and master their tracks as well. I believe this is the equivalent of playing an instrument live because it does take some work. Look it up on YouTube I kid you not. For this guy who thinks the bald 40 year old dude did the work of music. He didn’t, keep rooting skrillex because he does make his own music. This “bald” guy was doing sound. Meaning, checking levels of all speakers making sure there’s just enough of high, mid, and low frequencies so the audience can get a very powerful show. He probably also did alot of the light work. Skrillex has some crazy light shows but those are all programmed through computers like this “bald” guy was doing. I saw him in Denver, and it was a crazy show. It’s a completely different art and no doubt, the show wouldn’t have been as great without this 40 year old dude because he had to know what he was doing. But for music sakes, it was all skrilly!
